Swing Dance La Crosse

We perform Lindyhop and East Coast Swing, and teach dance in the Coulee Region! Come take a lesson with us today!

Lindyhop is an American dance which was born in the African-American communities of Harlem, New York City, in 1928 and has evolved since then. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. (Lindyhop is the precursor to a dance commonly known as East Coast Swing.)

In its development, the Lindyhop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African-American dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances โ€“ most clearly illustrated in the Lindy’s defining move, the swingout. Lindy is danced as a social dance, with improvisation as a central part.

What are classes like?

During classes, we strongly encourage all who are attending to rotate during classes. This means that every follower dances with every lead, so that everyone learns from each other! Because we rotate, you do not have to bring your own partner, though it’s fine if you do! Wear any clothes you feel comfortable moving in, and any shoes you’d normally wear for a day at the gym. A smile is the most important thing to wear while swing dancing.

Swing = Fun!

This dance is like the music, which has its African-American roots in liberation. Improvisation, silliness, and a touch of goofy are all encouraged in this dance.

Private lessons

We also teach private lessons if you have an event (wedding, birthday, etc.) coming up and want to feel more comfortable on the dance floor!
